Japanware Tutorial - Introduction The late seventeenth century saw the manufacture of Pontypool Japan. This was a method of varnishing materials to obtain a durable, lustrous finish. Although the method originated in the Far East, The Hanbury's of Pontypool pioneered the production of iron Japan-ware and with its decorated, lacquered style 'Pontypool Japan ware' became highly sought-after. It became one of Pontypool's most outstanding 18th century achievements. This tutorial will take you through the history of Japanware.
