Japanware Tutorial - Introduction

The late seventeenth century saw the manufacture of Pontypool Japan. This was a method of varnishing materials to obtain a durable, lustrous finish. Although the method originated in the Far East, The Hanbury's of Pontypool pioneered the production of iron Japan-ware and with its decorated, lacquered style 'Pontypool Japan ware' became highly sought-after. It became one of Pontypool's most outstanding 18th century achievements.

This tutorial will take you through the history of Japanware. It starts with its origins in the Far East through to how its development in Pontypool to the ceasing of production altogether in 1817.
