The History of Japanning The original oriental Japanwork dates back at least to the 12th Century BC and came originally from the east, mainly China, India and Japan. It was produced by the use of natural lacquers which would take a very high polish. The surfaces were highly decorated and the designs could be extremely beautiful. There were floral designs, pictures of castles and temples and exquisite landscapes. By the 16th century, the Japanese had developed the art to perfection and the best work came to be associated with Japan hence the term "Japanning". They began to produced items of furniture such as beautiful screens and cabinets. |
