Benjamin Barker - The First 40 Years

Born into a landed Nottinghamshire family, the first forty years of Benjamin's life were spent practising as a barrister and in running his estates near Newark on Trent.

However, persistent and unsuccessful gambling on horses, which were his main interest, led to his wealth being diminished to the extent that by 1760 he had been forced to sell his lands and to look to a means of gaining a livelihood.
