Torfaen Museum Trust future plans

Renovations Appeal - The Trust needs to find funding and raise money for the extensive repairs and restoration of the museum's Grade II* listed building as well as refurbishment of the building to provide: a Lifelong Learning Suite on the first floor (including research area, library & archive, training & schoolroom); a new gallery space on the ground floor; provision of many disabled access facilities to all areas of the building and new display areas at the rear of the building enabling publicly viewable storage.

So far the Trust has been given money from CADW towards the outside of the building and a Welsh Assembly Government Grant of £90,000 for provision of the Life Long Learning Suite.

Torfaen Museum Trust has several other exciting projects either current or in the pipeline:

  • A scheme to enable sponsorship by local and national businesses or societies of display at the Trusts Pontypool Museum site.  The business or society will pay only 95 for the provision of a showcase which will bear their company or association logo and details.
  • The free access for all members of the communities within the valley by waiving admission fees for all local library service cardholders.  This forms part of a Torfaen County Borough Council scheme to include free access to many of the local leisure facilities and any loss in revenue is supported by aid from the Leisure, Youth & Culture Division of the Local Authority.

  • A Pilot Scheme Partnership Project is now underway with Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre, Cwmbran (funded for the second year by the CyMAL).  This provides a joint Education Outreach Officer to promote and extend the educational facilities of both institutions.

  • This year, Pontypool Museum has been chosen with Carmarthenshire Museums Service to become the new partners with the National Museums & Galleries of Wales partners in the 'Sharing the Treasures' Scheme which is funded by the Wales Assembly Government. The first Project as part of this scheme will be to refurbish the NMGW's display of dining furniture from Glantorfaen House, Pontypool on display in the museum. Particular emphasis will be made of interpretation and trilingual provision (Welsh, English & Braille) of the new facilities & display - as a welcome to the new neighbours of the museum, The Gwent Association for the Blind.
